Building questions in Hindi for everyday use
If you are learning how to form questions in Hindi, combine a question marker with a verb that matches the subject, time and number. Hindi usually needs no separate “do”: क्या आप कल आएँगे? means “Will you come tomorrow?”
For Hindi-speaking learners in Australia, grammar becomes easier when linked to catching trains, checking prices, driving or speaking with service providers. These examples show how one structure changes in daily life.
The basic Hindi question pattern
A common yes-or-no question starts with क्या, followed by the subject and verb. क्या आप ऑस्ट्रेलिया में रहते हैं? asks whether the listener lives in Australia. Use है with singular subjects and हैं with most plural subjects: क्या आपके मित्र यहाँ रहते हैं?
Wh-questions usually begin with कब, कहाँ or कौन. कब बस आती है? means “When does the bus come?”, while कहाँ मेट्रो स्टेशन है? means “Where is the metro station?” Hindi generally preserves subject–object order.
Question intonation matters too. मेट्रो पाँच बजे आती है can sound like a request for confirmation with a rising tone. Context and pronunciation work alongside grammar.
Choosing the right question word
Choose the word that matches the missing information. कब asks about time, कहाँ about a place, and कौन about a person. For one option, use a form that agrees with the noun: कौन-सी बस सेंट्रल स्टेशन जाती है? means “Which bus goes to Central Station?”
When learning place vocabulary, Indian city names can be compared with Australian names such as Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. This makes कौन-सा शहर सबसे सुविधाजनक लगता है?—“Which city seems most convenient?”—more meaningful.
क्यों asks for a reason, कैसे for a manner, and कितना, कितनी or कितने for quantity. These forms agree with their nouns: कितना समय? “How much time?” and कितने लोग? “How many people?” For “For what purpose?”, किसलिए? is often more precise than क्यों.
Matching questions to tense and number
The verb carries much of the time information. For a repeated present habit, ask क्या आप हर दिन ऑफिस जाते हैं? For a past event, use क्या आपने कल रिपोर्ट भेजी थी? For a future plan, use क्या आप अगले सप्ताह वेबिनार में शामिल होंगे?
Do not import the English auxiliary “do.” क्या आप सोचते हैं? already means “Do you think?”, while क्या आपको लगता है? is the natural “What do you think?” A past action follows a related pattern: क्या आपने फ़ोन किया था?
Numbers are useful for appointments and transport. For extra Hindi reading involving time and number combinations, the site’s time bazar chart tag can support drills with किस समय, कितने मिनट and कौन-सी बस.
Turning statements into natural questions
Negation usually follows the subject and precedes the main verb or auxiliary. क्या आप कल नहीं आएँगे? means “Won’t you come tomorrow?”, while क्या आपने रिपोर्ट नहीं भेजी? means “Didn’t you send the report?”
A yes-or-no question can sit inside a larger sentence. मुझे जानना है कि क्या ट्रेन समय पर है। means “I want to know whether the train is on time.” Here क्या follows कि because the thought is embedded rather than asked directly.
Requests use सकते हैं or सकती हैं. क्या आप मुझे बस का समय बता सकते हैं? means “Can you tell me the bus time?” Adding कृपया (“please”) makes the request warmer with a stranger or service provider.
Using Hindi in Australian daily life
Public transport offers natural practice. In Sydney, ask क्या आप सिडनी में ओपल कार्ड इस्तेमाल करते हैं? Melbourne’s माइकी कार्ड and Brisbane’s गो कार्ड offer similar prompts: क्या आप अपने शहर में ट्रांसपोर्ट कार्ड इस्तेमाल करते हैं?
Australia’s left-side driving is another useful topic. क्या आप बाएँ चलना जानते हैं? asks whether the listener knows how to drive on the left and can prompt a conversation about road rules and learner licences.
The property and weekend markets provide useful vocabulary. While viewing a flat, क्या किराये की शर्तें और बॉन्ड राशि स्पष्ट हैं? asks whether the terms and bond are clear. At a market stall, क्या यह कीमत स्पष्ट रूप से लिखी गई है? asks whether the price is clearly written.
Australian consumer law is relevant when buying or requesting a service. The Australian Consumer Law, part of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010, requires clear information and prohibits misleading conduct in many transactions. क्या यह दुकान कीमत और शर्तें स्पष्ट रूप से दिखा रही है? means “Does this shop clearly show the price and conditions?”
Patterns to practise and reuse
Use these sentence frames before adding more detail.
- क्या + subject + verb: क्या आप कल काम करते हैं? asks about a routine.
- क्या + subject + future verb + object: क्या आप कल मेलबर्न आएँगे? asks about a plan.
- क्या + subject + past verb + था/थी/थे: क्या आपने कल खाना खाया था? asks about a completed action.
- Wh-word + subject + verb: कब आप ऑफिस से लौटते हैं? asks about a habitual time.
For missing information, build questions around these question words.
- कब means “when” and fits actions: कब बस आती है?
- कहाँ means “where” and fits locations: कहाँ फ़िल्म शूट हुआ?
- कौन means “who” and identifies a person: कौन यह बुकिंग की है?
- कौन-सा, कौन-सी or कौन-से means “which” and agrees with the noun.
- क्यों, कैसे, कितना, कितनी and कितने cover reasons, methods and quantities.
Nuances and a confident practice routine
Register changes social distance. आप suits most adults, including customers, teachers and officials. तुम is warm and informal, often used with friends or close peers; तुमसे, not तुम से, is the usual “with you” form.
Word placement can shift emphasis. A discussion of the Latin phrase shows how arrangement affects tone in poetry; similarly, क्या at the front marks a direct question, while कि introduces an embedded question. A rising intonation can also make a statement sound tentative.
Watch for two errors: adding an unnecessary “do” and using a verb that does not agree with its subject. क्या आप सोचते हैं? and क्या आप सोचते हो? are natural in formal and familiar contexts respectively.
Choose one familiar Australian situation today, write three Hindi questions about it, say them aloud and revise them with a trusted dictionary or speaker. Repeat the process with transit, shopping and workplace requests until the patterns feel automatic.
